The Elementary years are a child’s first introduction to formal education. Hopefully they will teach him that learning is fun and not a drudgery. However, you cannot simply dress learning up to make it “look” fun.

He must discover for himself the joy of building new relationships with new plants, animals, events, ideas, etc. His education should include not just reading, writing, and arithmetic. It should include Judaic Studies, Hebrew, Literature, History, Science, Geography, Art, Music, etc. This is the time that the student discovers just how many marvelous things there are to learn!

This is also not a time to focus on formal writing. Handwriting, yes. But instead of developing skills in written expression, it is first important to improve skills in oral expression as these will set the stage for studies in written expression. After all, until a child can read fluently, what would be the point of writing? Children develop in a sequential order, one step at a time. Skipping steps robs students of the opportunity to appreciate the lessons that are specifically suited to this unique stage of development!
